DOHA, Qatar (AP) — Chang Yani topped teammate Chen Yiwen on the 3-meter springboard Friday, giving the powerhouse Chinese team its eighth diving gold medal of the World Aquatics Championships. Beginning with their emergence in 1984, the Chinese have won 47 of 72 diving gold medals. Since the Olympic program doubled from four to eight events in 2000, they have been even more dominant — 38 gold medals in 48 events. One thing the Chinese haven't done is take the top spot in all eight diving events at a single Olympics. The final two diving events will be held Saturday at the Hamad Aquatic Centre.

BENGALURU, Nov 13 (Reuters) - Elena Micheli is "heartbroken" that horse riding will not be part of modern pentathlon beyond next year's Paris Olympics but the world champion told Reuters that obstacle racing was the way forward for the sport. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) dropped the sport from its initial list for the 2028 Los Angeles Games but approved its inclusion last month after global governing body UIPM replaced horse riding with obstacle racing. "The idea that Paris will be the last edition with horse riding breaks my heart," Italian Micheli, the 2022 and 2023 individual world champion, told Reuters via email. "Obstacle racing has obviously been a useful substitution in economical, entertainment and timing terms, even if they're two different worlds. "Modern pentathlon has always been a sport of arrangements and changes," Micheli added.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Bryce Harper wants big leaguers to play in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred says pausing the regular season to make that happen would be difficult. “Everyone appreciates the challenges associated with major league players playing in a tournament that is in the middle of our season,” Manfred said before Fridays' World Series opener. The 31-year-old has long been an advocate of MLB taking a break during the season to let major leaguers play in the Olympics. “Casey Wasserman has been supportive of getting baseball back in the Olympics, which we appreciate,” Manfred said.

Cricket is an Olympic sport again. Five sports were finally added to the 2028 Los Angeles Games by the International Olympic Committee on Monday with baseball-softball, lacrosse and squash also confirmed for the program. All five were voted in as a single package with two “no” votes from about 90 IOC members in the room. “We want L.A. 2028 to have the same springboard effect for our five sports,” Los Angeles organizing committee chairman Casey Wasserman told IOC members. Football in its full-contact form was a demonstration sport at the 1932 Olympics when Los Angeles first hosted the Summer Games.

The Philadelphia Phillies slugger said it would be a dream to play for Team USA when baseball returns for the 2028 Los Angeles Games. He would be 10 years into the contract and 35 years old, should he get the chance to play for Team USA in LA. The WBC is operated by MLB and takes place during spring training, meaning players do not need to miss regular season games to participate. Cricket, flag football, softball, lacrosse and squash also were confirmed Monday by the International Olympic Committee to be held at the Los Angeles Games. Phillies manager Rob Thomson, raised in Corunna, Ontario, was part of the Canadian squad that competed in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles when baseball was a demonstration sport.

Lacrosse, squash and baseball-softball had also been proposed by LA Games organisers for inclusion and received approval at an IOC meeting in Mumbai. The LA Games proposal is for a six-team Twenty20 cricket tournament for men and women. The tournament is played in the same T20 format that the game will feature in during the LA 2028 games. Flag football is a non-contact format of American football played by teams of five. American football last featured as a demonstration sport in 1932 LA Games.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Dallas, Florida and New York will host matches at next year's men's T20 World Cup, the governing body of cricket announced Wednesday. Venues in Grand Prairie outside Dallas and Broward County in Florida will be increased in size to expand seating, media and premium hospitality areas to enable them to host matches in the 20-team tournament, which makes it the biggest T20 World Cup yet. Florida also hosted recent T20s between India and the West Indies at Central Broward Stadium in Lauderhill. The T20 cricket format is favored to be one of the sports added to the program for the 2028 Los Angeles Games, with decisions by the International Olympic Committee scheduled at meetings next month in Mumbai, India. Problems in talks between the IOC and the Los Angeles organizing committee on commercial issues have stalled the process.

LONDON, April 4 (Reuters) - British boxers will not take part in the men's amateur world championships in Tashkent after the country also boycotted last month's women's event in India amid mounting concern about the sport's Olympic future. The men's tournament starts on April 30 in the Uzbek capital and runs to May 14. GB Boxing had said in February when it announced a boycott of the women's championships that it was reviewing participation in the men's. GB Boxing will send a team to the European Games in Poland, an official qualifying event for the Paris 2024 Olympics. The U.S. and Irish federations announced in February they would not be participating in either the women's or men's world championships.
Feb 23 (Reuters) - Ukraine's boxing federation (FBU) has joined a growing boycott of the amateur world championships over the inclusion of Russian and Belarusian boxers, who have been allowed to compete with national flags and anthems. Both competitions are organised by the International Boxing Association (IBA), led by Russian Umar Kremlev. The IBA lifted a ban on Russian and Belarusian boxers competing under their flags last October, against the International Olympic Committee's guidance following Russia's invasion of Ukraine a year ago, for which Belarus was a key staging area. "Our answer is clear - our athletes and representatives of the Boxing Federation of Ukraine do not compete where representatives of the aggressor countries, namely Russia and Belarus, will compete," Ilchenko said. Ukraine's boxers would also boycott next year's Olympic Games in Paris if Russian and Belarusian boxers are present, Ilchenko said.
USA Boxing condemns IBA's 'misleading' 2024 Olympic qualifiers

Feb 21 (Reuters) - The Russian-led International Boxing Association's (IBA's) announcement that its world championships are qualifiers for the 2024 Olympics is "false and misleading" and an attempt to sabotage qualification for the Paris Games, USA Boxing said. "USA Boxing condemns in the strongest possible terms this attempt by IBA to confuse boxers from around the world, knowing full well that IBA is not associated with the International Olympic Committee nor the IOC's published qualification system," McAtee said. At worst, USA Boxing believes this may be an attempt to sabotage the Olympic qualification for the Paris Olympic Games," the statement added. On Sunday, Switzerland and the Netherlands joined the United States, Ireland, Britain, Czech Republic, Sweden and Canada in boycotting the women's world championships to be held in New Delhi, India's capital, over March 15-26. Two world qualification tournaments are also planned for 2024.
LONDON, Feb 10 (Reuters) - Amateur boxing's Russian-led governing body has offered to fund U.S. and Irish boxers wanting to compete in this year's world championships after their national federations decided to boycott the tournaments. The International Boxing Association (IBA) also warned in a statement on Friday that it would pursue "strong sanctions against those who initiate and join the participation boycott". "Those who are doing this to our athletes are worse than hyenas and jackals, they violate the integrity of sport and culture. The Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) said on Friday its boxers, referees and judges would be staying away. "IBA invites USA and Irish teams to come to the world championships and participate under their flags and anthems," it said.

REUTERS/Denis BalibouseSept 25 (Reuters) - Russian Umar Kremlev will remain president of the International Boxing Association (IBA) after delegates at its extraordinary congress in Armenia on Sunday rejected the proposal to stage a new election. Dutch candidate Boris van der Vorst's hopes of challenging Kremlev for the presidency ended after 106 delegates voted against holding a new election, with 36 voting in favour and four abstaining. Kremlev was elected unopposed in May after Van der Vorst was declared ineligible. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled in June that Van der Vorst was wrongly prevented from standing.
